Hi Mama, welcome to a space where your health, your family’s well-being, and the planet come first. At Mama Naturally, we understand the power of the choices we make every day — and how the products we bring into our homes can impact our health, now and for generations to come. If you’re looking for safe, effective, and honest alternatives to the toxic mainstream options, you’ve come to the right place. As a mama, registered nurse, and wellness advocate, I’ve walked the path of illness, loss, and healing, and I’m here to help you create a healthier, non-toxic environment for your family. Through thoughtful research, trusted reviews, and simple solutions, I’m on a mission to empower you to live cleaner, healthier, and more intentional lives.

When it comes to creating a healthier home environment, the products you use daily are just as important as the food you eat or the air you breathe. Many everyday household products contain harmful toxins that can affect your health over time. From cleaning products to beauty items, these chemicals can lead to everything from skin irritation to respiratory issues, and even long-term diseases.

The good news? You can easily replace these toxic items with natural alternatives. Let’s explore the top 10 common toxins you should remove from your home — and what you can use instead for a cleaner, safer, and healthier lifestyle.

1. All-Purpose Cleaner with Phthalates

Arrangement of natural cleaning and wellness products including a spray bottle, essential oil dropper bottles, a wooden brush, a small bowl of salt, sage smudging stick, and a pink crystal, all on a light fabric background.

Phthalates are chemicals commonly found in many cleaning products and fragrances. They can disrupt the endocrine system and have been linked to developmental and reproductive issues, especially in children.

Instead, Use:
A simple mix of white vinegarbaking soda, and essential oils can clean just about anything in your home. The vinegar acts as a disinfectant, baking soda helps scrub, and essential oils like tea tree or lavender oil offer antibacterial properties and a pleasant scent.

2. Air Fresheners with Artificial Fragrances

Artificial air fresheners often contain harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, which is linked to cancer and respiratory issues. While they may smell nice, they’re making your home less healthy.

Instead, Use:
Essential oils are a fantastic and natural alternative. Use a diffuser with oils like eucalyptus, peppermint, or citrus to freshen the air. You can also make a natural air freshener spray by mixing water, essential oils, and a splash of alcohol.

3. Non-Stick Cookware with PFAS

Many non-stick pans contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), which can lead to hormone disruption and are linked to cancer. These substances are particularly dangerous when the coating begins to degrade or chip.

Instead, Use:
Opt for cast iron or stainless steel cookware. Both are non-toxic, durable, and long-lasting. If you love the ease of non-stick cooking, look for cookware made with ceramic coatings, which are safer alternatives.

My favorite brands:

Made in, Le Creuset, Our Place & Green Pan! PFAS free cookware safe for the whole family!

4. Antibacterial Soap with Triclosan

While antibacterial soap might seem like a good choice to keep germs at bay, it often contains triclosan, a chemical that contributes to antibiotic resistance and can disrupt hormones.

Instead, Use:
Switch to a simple Castile soap or an organic liquid soap. These are naturally antibacterial and won’t harm your body or the environment. Plus, they often come in eco-friendly packaging. I also love Deep Steep for my home! They have a wonderful Champagne Citrus or Limoncello scented soaps for the kitchen & Eucalyptus or Ladenver Vanilla for the bathrooms!

5. Candles with Synthetic Fragrances and Paraffin Wax

Many candles on the market are made from paraffin wax, a byproduct of petroleum, and contain synthetic fragrances that release toxins when burned. These can irritate the lungs and cause allergic reactions.

Instead, Use:
Choose beeswax or soy-based candles that are naturally scented with essential oils. These options burn cleaner, produce less soot, and don’t release harmful chemicals into the air.

6. Plastic Water Bottles with BPA

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical found in many plastics, especially water bottles and food containers. BPA can leach into your food and water, potentially leading to reproductive harm and even cancer.

Instead, Use:
Switch to glassstainless steel, or BPA-free plastic water bottles. These are safer and more sustainable options for staying hydrated without the risk of harmful chemicals.

7. Laundry Detergent with Optical Brighteners

Collection of eco-friendly laundry products including a bottle of detergent, a glass jar of laundry powder, a spray bottle, wool dryer balls, and a wooden scoop, with greenery in the background.

Many commercial laundry detergents contain optical brighteners, chemicals that make clothes appear whiter and brighter but can irritate the skin and have toxic effects on the environment.

Instead, Use:
Look for plant-based laundry detergents that are free from artificial fragrances, dyes, and brighteners. You can even make your own detergent using washing sodaborax, and a gentle soap like Castile.

8. Furnishing with Flame Retardants

Many furniture and mattresses are treated with flame retardants to meet safety regulations, but these chemicals can leach into the air and pose serious health risks, including hormone disruption and developmental issues.

Instead, Use:
Opt for natural, untreated furniture like organic cotton mattresses and wool cushions. You can also choose furniture made with sustainable materials like bamboo, which is free from harmful chemicals.

9. Non-Organic Produce with Pesticides

Conventionally grown produce often contains pesticide residues that can be harmful to your health over time. Pesticides have been linked to everything from cancer to neurological damage.

Instead, Use:
Buy organic produce whenever possible. Now I know organic produce can cost a fortune so if that’s not always an option, focus on purchasing Dirty Dozen fruits and vegetables (which are the most pesticide-laden) from organic sources. Another cost effective option is to purchase Oragnic frozen fruits and veggies!

10. Plastic Food Containers with Phthalates

Phthalates, again, are a concern with many food containers. These chemicals can leach into food and contribute to hormonal imbalances and other health issues.

Instead, Use:
Switch to glass or stainless steel containers for food storage. Not only are they non-toxic, but they also keep food fresh longer and are reusable, making them a more eco-friendly choice. I absolutely love Pyrex brand which you can buy online, at target and even at Costco!
