🌿 The Ultimate Non-Toxic Ingredient Cheat Sheet (Every Mama Needs This on Her Phone)

Let’s rewind to a few years ago — I’m standing in my husband Anthony’s side of the bathroom, scanning product after product… and y’all, I was shocked. I had just started learning about hidden toxins, and suddenly every label looked like a chemistry exam. From his shaving cream to body wash, everything was loaded with unpronounceable ingredients I now knew weren’t doing him, his balding head — or our home — any favors.

That’s when I did what any newly converted low-tox mama would do: I grabbed a trash bag and did a full clean haul. Bye-bye parabens, phthalates, and mystery “fragrances.” ✌🏼

Then when I had my babies — sweet Livi and little Ashton — there was no way I was letting those same chemicals touch their fresh new skin. From diaper cream to shampoo, I was that mom in the store aisle with my phone in one hand, baby in the other, Googling every label.

But let’s be real — who has time (or brain space) to memorize all these weird ingredient names?

That’s why I created this Non-Toxic Ingredient Cheat Sheet — a simple, downloadable guide you can keep on your phone and reference anytime you’re shopping. Because once you know better, you want to do better — and having this quick-glance list makes that 100x easier…

Let’s break it down 👇🏻

Common Toxic Ingredients to Avoid (And Why They Matter)

These are the biggest offenders I see in skincare, baby products, cleaning sprays, and even so-called “natural” items. Here’s why they don’t belong in your home:

1. Fragrance / Parfum

  • Why it’s harmful: This one tops the list for a reason. “Fragrance” is an industry loophole that can hide over 3,000+ chemicals, including known allergens, hormone disruptors, and phthalates.
  • What studies show: Linked to endocrine disruption, migraines, asthma, and skin irritation — and it’s everywhere.
  • Where it hides: Lotion, shampoo, candles, wipes, laundry detergent.

2. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) / SLES

  • Why it’s harmful: These are foaming agents that strip your skin barrier.
  • What studies show: Can cause skin irritation, dryness, and may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a probable carcinogen.
  • Where it hides: Body wash, shampoo, toothpaste, baby soap.

3. Saracens (methyl-, propyl-, butyl-)

  • Why it’s harmful: Used to preserve products, but mimic estrogen in the body.
  • What studies show: Found in breast cancer tissue; disrupts hormone function.
  • Where it hides: Moisturizers, makeup, baby wipes, sunscreen.

4. Phthalates

  • Why it’s harmful: Often undisclosed, used to make scents last longer.
  • What studies show: Linked to reproductive harm, birth defects, and hormone imbalance.
  • Where it hides: Fragrance, nail polish, vinyl toys, soft plastics.

5. PEGs (Polyethylene Glycol compounds)

  • Why it’s harmful: Used as softeners or emulsifiers.
  • What studies show: Can be contaminated with carcinogens like ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane.
  • Where it hides: Creams, lotions, makeup, baby wipes.

6. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives

  • Why it’s harmful: Yes, actual formaldehyde — a known carcinogen.
  • What studies show: Linked to cancer, skin sensitivity, and allergies.
  • Where it hides: Shampoo, baby soap, nail polish, mascara.

7. Triclosan

  • Why it’s harmful: Antibacterial agent that disrupts thyroid and gut microbiome.
  • What studies show: Contributes to antibiotic resistance and hormone disruption.
  • Where it hides: Hand soap, toothpaste, deodorant.

8. BHA / BHT

  • Why it’s harmful: Synthetic preservatives used in food and cosmetics.
  • What studies show: Possible carcinogens and endocrine disruptors.
  • Where it hides: Lipsticks, diaper creams, lotions, processed foods.

9. Toluene

  • Why it’s harmful: A solvent that affects the nervous system.
  • What studies show: Linked to birth defects and developmental toxicity.
  • Where it hides: Nail polish, hair dyes, paint thinners.

10. Oxybenzone

  • Why it’s harmful: Common in chemical sunscreens.
  • What studies show: Hormone disruptor, linked to coral bleaching, and found in human breast milk.
  • Where it hides: Sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, foundation.

Safer Alternatives to Look For (and Why They’re Amazing)

Now for the fun part — clean ingredients that actually work and support your wellness journey:

🌿 1. Essential Oils

Why they’re better:
Unlike synthetic fragrances that can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, essential oils are pure plant extracts. Not only do they smell beautiful, but many offer actual benefits — like lavender for calming, tea tree for its antimicrobial properties, and eucalyptus for clearing the airways.

How they work:
When used properly (diluted and sourced from reputable brands), essential oils can scent your home, boost your mood, and even support the immune system. I use them in our DIY cleaners, diffuser blends, and even in my laundry routine.

Tip: Always choose oils that are 100% pure, therapeutic-grade, and third-party tested for quality.

🥥 2. Coconut-Based Cleansers

Why they’re better:
Instead of harsh sulfates that strip your skin barrier, coconut-derived surfactants (like coco glucoside or sodium coco-sulfate) offer a gentler, non-irritating way to cleanse skin and hair — especially for kids or sensitive skin.

How they work:
Coconut-based cleansers lift away dirt and oil without drying out your skin. They create that satisfying sudsy feel but without the chemical load.

Tip: Look for labels that list coconut-derived or plant-based surfactants — and skip anything with just “SLS.”

🧈 3. Shea Butter / Cocoa Butter

Why they’re better:
These natural butters are full of essential fatty acids and vitamins A & E. They moisturize, soothe inflammation, and help restore the skin barrier — without petroleum, parabens, or artificial preservatives.

How they work:
Both butters melt into the skin and create a natural seal, locking in moisture and preventing dryness or cracking. They’re especially healing for stretch marks, baby bottoms, eczema, or post-shave irritation.

Tip: Raw, unrefined versions retain more of their healing properties — and a little goes a long way!

🌱 4. Aloe Vera

Why it’s better:
This plant has been used for centuries to soothe burns, hydrate skin, and calm inflammation — and it’s still one of my go-tos for rashes, bug bites, sunburns, and even diaper irritation.

How it works:
Aloe is packed with vitamins, enzymes, and amino acids. It’s naturally cooling and antibacterial, making it ideal for sensitive or inflamed skin.

Tip: Look for products that list aloe as one of the first ingredients, or better yet — keep a live aloe plant at home and use it fresh.

☀️ 5. Zinc Oxide (Non-Nano)

Why it’s better:
Zinc oxide is a mineral sunscreen that sits on top of the skin and physically blocks UV rays — unlike chemical sunscreens (like oxybenzone) that absorb into your bloodstream.

How it works:
Non-nano zinc particles are too large to penetrate the skin, making them a safe and effective barrier against UVA and UVB rays — even for babies, pregnant mamas, or those with sensitivities.

Tip: Look for non-nano, reef-safe zinc formulas in sunblocks for the cleanest protection.

🧼 6. Castile Soap

Why it’s better:
Castile soap is made from oils like olive, coconut, or hemp — and is completely free of synthetic detergents, fragrances, or preservatives.

How it works:
It’s a super versatile base: you can use it for body wash, hand soap, dish soap, all-purpose cleaner, even pet shampoo. Just dilute with water and add essential oils for scent.

Tip: Dr. Bronner’s is the OG, but there are other great brands out there too. Start with the unscented version for babies or sensitive skin.

💧 7. Vegetable Glycerin

Why it’s better:
Derived from plants (usually soy, coconut, or palm), glycerin is a humectant — meaning it draws moisture into the skin. It’s lightweight, non-comedogenic, and incredibly soothing.

How it works:
Glycerin helps hydrate and soften skin by holding water within the top layer. It’s perfect in toners, moisturizers, and baby lotions — and helps make DIY products smoother and more shelf-stable.

Tip: Use in small amounts — just a little glycerin goes a long way when blended with water or aloe.

🧂 8. Baking Soda & Vinegar

Why they’re better:
These humble pantry staples are powerhouse cleaners. They cut through grime, neutralize odors, and disinfect — without synthetic chemicals or fumes.

How they work:

  • Baking soda is a gentle abrasive that scrubs away buildup and deodorizes.
  • Vinegar (acetic acid) dissolves mineral deposits, soap scum, and kills bacteria.

Tip: Don’t combine them directly in a bottle (they fizz and cancel each other out). Use them separately as part of a multi-step clean — like baking soda to scrub, vinegar to rinse.

📲 Keep This Cheat Sheet On Your Phone

I designed this downloadable cheat sheet to be your go-to tool whenever you’re shopping. Because let’s be honest — no one’s remembering how to spell “methylisothiazolinone” off the top of their head while wrangling two toddlers at Target. 🙃

😅 Final Thoughts From a Mama Who’s Been There

Look — I’m not perfect. I’ve bought the “eco-friendly” shampoo with a giant green leaf on it, only to flip it over and find a toxic soup. I’ve used products on my kids that made their skin worse, not better. I’ve learned this all one label at a time (usually with my phone flashlight on in a grocery aisle at 9PM 😅).

But now? I’m more empowered. More confident. And if this cheat sheet can help one mama skip the confusion and find something safer faster, then it’s done its job.

Because clean living isn’t about being perfect — it’s about making better choices, one bottle, one label, and one day at a time. 💛
